Robot as a Stand-in

September 10, 2010

This is not the kind of robot you have in mind. Basically it’s a walking LCD screen equipped with a camera and speakers.

Check this two videos at New York Times: “Robots at Work” and “Can’t Attend? Send Your Robot Instead“.

Is talking to this walking-screen robot better than, well, a normal on-wall screen? In the opening story in this article, “The Boss Is Robotic, and Rolling Up Behind You“, Dr. Shatzel maneuvers this robot to talk to the patient at the emergency. This seems that it can be done with a on-wall screen and a camera that can rotate at different angles. Moving this machine from one room to another takes too much time. Since the robot doesn’t have hands, it cannot go on from one floor to another without any assistance.

It’s an interesting idea and I’m sure that it has a great potential. If it gets some more “handful” functions. ;-)
