Auto Photo Beautification

October 12, 2008

Here are two photos, before and after the retouching by the beautification engine. Which one is better?

Lars Klove for The New York Times, manipulation by Tommer Leyvand(from New York Times)

The left is before and the right is after the retouching. The program, developed in Israel, uses a mathematical formula to alter the facial features to be more attractive, theoretically.

According to the studies mentioned in this article from New York Times, what make a face attractive:

  • Symmetry
  • Youthfulness
  • Clarity or smoothness of skin
  • Vivid color in eyes and hairs

Despite of people of different cultures, ethnicities, races, ages and gender.

However, not all have the same standards toward beauty. One of developers of this software, Tommer Leyvand explained that the goal was not to prove that the altered faces are more beautiful. Instead they wanted tackle the challenge of altering a face based on the “general” standards of attractiveness so that the reproduced face is completely recognizable:

… rather than the product of cosmetic surgery or digital retouching.

Hmm.. doesn’t the example above show quite significant changes from the original one? 😕

Only in this slide show, using actors and actresses’ photos as example, you can see the subtleness in the alternation. Do you think the altered ones are more beautiful? 😐
