Zotero Sync Public Testing

July 9, 2008

Zotero just annouced the launch of public testing Zotero 1.5 Sync, which includes exciting new features:

  • Automatic synchronization of your collections among multiple computers
  • Free automatic backup of your collections on Zotero’s servers
  • Support for existing EndNote® export styles
  • New style manager
  • Preliminar su[[ort for local sharing of collections through ZeroConf on OS X (other platforms will be supported later)

To try Zotero 1.5 Sync Preview, you will need to use Firefox 3 and set up an account in Zotero forum if you haven’t. It’s also recommended to set up a new profile in your Firefox with the copy of your Zotero library.

If you are not in the mood of testing this new add-on but still need the synchronization/backup part, you can try one of Zotero portable solutions. The easiest way, in my opinion, is to use Portable Firefox on a USB thumb drive. I had relied on Portable Apps while the power of my office was set for repair. It’s quite convenient. However, keep in mind that few settings in preferences are different from the desktop version (e.g. session history is off).

Anyway, I’m very excited to hear this news and look forward to Zotero 1.5. 🙂
