Google Gear Plug-in for Offline Access

May 31, 2007

Just noticed a new feature in my Google Reader

If you check at it, you will see this window

Google Gear

Once you install this plug-in and restart your browser, after login your account you have an option to go offline (green arrow). It will download the 2000 most recent items to your local machine. Next time when you login, it will synchronize the items (read/unread) an get the new ones ready for download.

For me, I prefer read the feeds online. If the information is useful and needs to check frequently, I can just use ScrapBook add-on to save it in my PC. Surely it’s convenient for people who are always on the move.

Anyway, rumor has it that this tool will be extended to GMail & Documents later. Let’s see.

EDIT: A related article “Moving Web-Based Software Offline” from New York Times on May 31, 2007.
