Wild, Wild Leo Playing Ravel (compared with Argerich’s)

February 17, 2007

What a surprise! Bernstein conducted and played Ravel’s piano concerto in Paris (reminding me An American in Paris). Here is the video recorded in 1975, accompanied by National Orchestra of France.

Very vigorous playing. The 3rd movement took Bernstein about 3:35 to finish. Now let’s compare with Argerich’s performance in 1985.

It’s about 3:47 for Argerich, 12 seconds (5.6 %) slower than Bernstein. I think Argerich’s playing has more details in music while Bernstein’s is more fun to watch. Who said classical music is boring?

PS: This video of Bernstein can be found in this DVD. I can’t find the information about Argerich’s video.
