Lots of Junk over Our Heads

February 6, 2007

Can you imagine? There are more than 10,000 detectable objects (4″ wide or larger) orbiting the earth. After China’s test on Jan 11, added hundreds of fragments from an old satellite shattered by an antisatellite rocket. Check out this story, “Orbiting Junk, Once a Nuisance, Is Now a Threat” by WILLIAM J. BROAD (Feb. 6, 2007; New York Times), which is accompany with an interactive graphic called “Littered Skies” (free access within 7 days of publication)

Note: Red dots are from China’s test. Blue dots are spacecrafts (about 3,100), while the light orange ones are old debris (nearly 7,000)
